Dear Classmate:
Happy New Year greetings to the members of the GREAT Class of 1958! As promised, here is the latest news about our class.
60-Year Reunion
From all accounts, those who attended our 60-Year reunion in September enjoyed a great weekend of events and activities; and if you're wondering if the Reunion Committee will plan a 65-Year reunion, rest assured that they will!! Stay tuned!!
Who Am I?
One of the most inspiring aspects of the 60-Year reunion was our classmate Eric Williams' address to the class at the reunion dinner at the Doubletree by Hilton Niagara Falls. Eric shared some interesting moments of his life which are included in a memoir he is writing, detailing his varied life in three phasescoming of age in Niagara Falls, his 30-year career with the FBI, and, in retirement, continuing his lifelong passion for the theater. He, along with others attending the reunion dinner who had submitted in advance three things about themselves that their classmates might not know, exemplified the vast knowledge, experiences, and interests of our fellow classmates. Bonnie Bradt Nye prepared the attached handout, which contains the information she received for the project. If you would like to continue this reunion exercise one step further by sharing three interesting things about your life, please send them to me at numarty40@gmail.com and I'll include them in future class news updates.
To illustrate the good works of our classmates, I need to go no further than that of our own Annie Barnes McCray, who will be making a return trip to Ghana April 18-26 with a group of students and other volunteers from Western New York participating in the 2019 Global Education Project sponsored by Global Partnerships Inc. The organization was founded by a Ghanian native who is a Spanish teacher at Lockport High School and annually leads groups to a community in Ghana on projects to improve the health and welfare of its residents. The projects include providing families with water purification kits, building wells to provide clean water, and this year to build latrines. Annie participated in the 2017 project and shared her photos and experiences with the local lunch group when she returned. At our recent November and December luncheons, she brought beautiful items made in Ghana for us to purchase with all proceeds going to fund the project. The "lunch ladies" bought them u p in quick fashion.
Attached is a photo of three of the dozen or so bracelets I bought for Christmas gifts for myself and the women in my family. If you are interested in learning more about the organization, go to its website at www.GEProject.org. If you would like to make a donation, remember to include that you are a member of the Niagara Falls High School Class of 1958. The following links to a local television video and newspaper article provide information on the volunteers who participated in the 2018 project: https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/lockport-teachers-bring-students-to-ghana-to-install-waterwell/1128962481 https://www.lockportjournal.com/news/local_news/students-make-a-difference-inghana/article_9f70eaf8-6ac4-5b82-b20a-49da439d3f41.html The local lunch group proudly supports Annie in this year's project and looks forward to her return, but first, this globe-hopping lady will be traveling with her daughter to Australia and New Zealand for an extended vacation. She is simply amazing!!
Check Presentation
The reunion committee recently donated a check in the amount of $650 to the Niagara Falls Education Foundation to fund a scholarship from the Class of 1958, which will be presented to a graduating senior in the Niagara Falls School District at the organization's annual Scholarship & Alumni Recognition Dinner in May. The donation included funds raised at the reunion from a 50/50 split raffle, several anonymous donations from classmates, and the reunion committee treasury. Attached is a photo of Marty Morgan Troia and Madlyne DiCecco Trunzo presenting the check to Bob Kazeangin and Art Jocoy from the Niagara Falls Education Foundation at our November class luncheon at the Como Restaurant.
