Elizabeth Smart

The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002 and endured daily sexual assault, starvation, and abuse for nine grueling months. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world about the very private nightmare she suffered during her abduction, which led to his conviction.

She went on to found the Elizabeth Smart Foundation in 2011. Since its inception, the foundation has actively fought against sexual violence.
Cyntoia Brown-Long

Cyntoia Brown-Long is an author, consultant, and advocate for criminal justice reform and survivors of trafficking. Cyntoia had a difficult start in life. After being trafficked during her early teenage years, at the age of 16, she was arrested for killing a man who solicited her for sex. She was tried as an adult and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole for 51 years. Her trafficker was never arrested. After 15 years in prison, her sentence was commuted and she was released. Cyntoia hopes her story will not only inspire others but also shine a light on the injustice many people still face, especially the injustice to women and children in American prisons.
