Welcome to Next Africa, a twice-weekly newsletter on where the continent stands now — and where it's headed. Sign up here to have it delivered to your email. The party that's ruled Namibia since the arid southwest African nation won independence almost 35 years ago has good reason to be nervous heading into Wednesday's elections. While the South West Africa People's Organisation won 65.5% of the vote in 2019, that was way down from 80% five years earlier. The decline reflected the electorate's disgruntlement over the government's persistent failure to create jobs, tackle graft and narrow the gap between rich and the poor. Download Swapo supporters at a rally in Windhoek on Nov. 24. Photographer: Simon Maina/AFP/Getty Images Those challenges persist. Namibia's unemployment rate stands at 43%, census data shows almost a third of households are accommodated in shacks and a crippling drought has further depleted water resources in the region's driest country. An Afrobarometer survey published in July showed 76% of Namibians felt the country was heading in the wrong direction, with joblessness and corruption among the respondents' top concerns. Recent election outcomes in two countries that border Namibia illustrate the risk Swapo faces. In Botswana, the party that held power for almost six decades finished fourth in a vote last month. And in South Africa, the African National Congress lost its national majority in May for the first times since apartheid ended in 1994, forcing it into a coalition with smaller rivals. It's possible, albeit unlikely, that Swapo will relinquish its parliamentary majority, according to political analyst Henning Melber, an associate at the Nordic Africa Institute at the University of Uppsala. He cautions that predicting the election outcome is tricky, because there haven't been any reliable opinion polls. Swapo's flagbearer is Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, currently Namibia's deputy president. She stands to become the country's first female leader if she wins. The four-year-old Independent Patriots for Change is likely to pose the biggest threat to the ruling party. Its founder, Panduleni Itula, is a former Swapo member who secured 29% of the vote when he ran for president as an independent in 2019. He is seen as the strongest of Nandi-Ndaitwah's 14 challengers. The next administration will need to manage an anticipated hydrocarbon boom following recent offshore discoveries by companies including TotalEnergies and Shell. Commercial production is set to begin as early as 2029. Expectations of a massive revenue influx ups the ante in what is already a high-stakes election race. — Kaula Nhongo Key stories and opinion: Disenchanted Namibians Vote as Nation Gears Up for Oil Boom Namibia Gets Ready to Become the World's Newest Oil Hotspot Africa's 'Year of Elections' Has Been Flawed: Justice Malala Diamond-Market Dip Spurs Seismic Political Shift in Botswana Mauritian Voters Hand Ramgoolam Fourth Term as Prime Minister News Roundup Mozambique's top court said its judges have received death threats as they consider whether to validate the outcome of last month's disputed elections. The threats were made via private messages and on social media, said Lúcia Ribeiro, president of the Constitutional Council. Mozambique is facing its most precarious post-election period since it embraced democracy three decades ago. The electoral commission said the ruling party and its presidential candidate won the vote by a landslide. Opposition candidate Venâncio Mondlane rejected the outcome as rigged and called for protests, sparking unrest in which dozens of people have died. Photographer: Alfredo Zuniga/AFP/Getty Images The Republic of Congo will begin instituting measures to boost revenue collection from next year to help end a cash shortage that resulted in the government restructuring its domestic debt, according to its finance minister. The authorities will implement policies to strengthen governance in public enterprises and boost the collection of dividends from those entities, increase transparency in the management of tax receipts and modernize administrative processes, Jean-Baptiste Ondaye said in an interview. Zimbabwe's chief debt negotiator, Akinwumi Adesina, wants to clinch a restructuring deal for the southern African nation before his term as head of the African Development Bank ends in August. Adesina and former Mozambican leader Joaquim Chissano were enlisted by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2022 to spearhead talks with creditors, including the World Bank, Paris Club, European Investment Bank and the AfDB. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's monthly inflation rate slowed for the first time in four months as volatility that's plagued the nation's gold-backed ZiG currency shows signs of ebbing. Blue/Bloomberg Sixteen passengers on an Egyptian tourist boat that sunk in the Red Sea early Monday remain missing, according to a government official. The 34-meter-long vessel, which had 44 passengers aboard, capsized after being hit by a big wave, said Amr Hanafi, governor of Egypt's Red Sea governorate, citing tourists and crew members who survived the accident. Twenty-eight passengers have been rescued so far. The authorities are still searching for 12 foreigners and four Egyptians. Malawi is building its first battery-energy system, technology that will help protect its grid from cyclones that have battered the southern African nation in recent years. The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, a fund that seeks to accelerate the shift to clean energy, is providing as much as $20 million for the project. The Malawian government and the state power utility are also contributing, with the goal of completing the system some time next year. Photographer: Jack McBrams/AFP/Getty Images Kenya plans to draw down on a $1.5 billion loan agreed with Abu Dhabi in tranches to remain within borrowing thresholds set in an International Monetary Fund program, according to sources. The government will likely access about $700 million at the start of 2025, while the rest of the money may be disbursed later, they said. To avert a debt crisis, Kenya signed up almost four years ago to a $3.62 billion IMF program that limits how much the nation can borrow to ensure the sustainability of its debt. Chart of the Week Download Nigeria's economy grew more than anticipated in the third quarter, buoyed by its services sectors that expanded at its fastest pace in almost two years. Gross domestic product expanded an annual 3.46% in the three months through September, slightly more than in the previous quarter. Telecommunications and financial services were among the main drivers of growth. Oil production also increased, aided by improved security in the Niger Delta region. Thanks for reading. Grolimund dear members of the ENQA Board in its decision concerning ASIIN's membership in ENQA from 7 December 2016 the Board identified three main findings that should be addressed by ASIIN within two years. First of all it was remarked that ASIIN lacked a Thematic analysis (ESG 3.4) of its own external quality assurance activities. Further weaknesses were detected regarding ESG 2.4 "Peer-review experts" and ESG 2.7 "Complaints and appeals". Against these issues ASIIN appealed presenting additional information on 7 February 2017. After analysis of the provided documents and explanations the ENQA Appeals and Complaints Committee (ACC) on 8 June 2017 concluded that ASIIN was indeed substantially compliant with the standards and criteria. Consequently ASIIN's status as ENQA Member under review was overturned and two of the originally identified issues were considered to be resolved (ESG 2.4 and ESG 2.7). In the following I would therefore like to focus on ASIIN's developments regarding the remaining issue of Thematic analysis (ESG 3.4) Education has always been a cornerstone of societal growth and personal development. It is the process through which individuals gain knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that prepare them to participate effectively in their communities and contribute meaningfully to the world. Across generations, education has proven to be a key driver of innovation, equality, and progress. Education begins at home, where children learn their first lessons of social interaction, empathy, and responsibility. As they grow older, formal education introduces them to a structured environment where they can explore subjects such as science, mathematics, literature, and the arts. This foundation not only broadens their horizons but also instills critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In the modern world, education has evolved beyond traditional classrooms. The advent of technology has revolutionized the way knowledge is disseminated, making education accessible to a larger audience than ever before. Online courses, virtual classrooms, and digital resources allow students from remote areas to learn from experts across the globe. This democratization of education is a significant step toward reducing global inequalities. One of the most profound impacts of education is its ability to empower individuals. When people are educated, they are better equipped to make informed decisions about their health, careers, and relationships. Education provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of poverty by opening doors to better job opportunities and financial independence. Moreover, education fosters cultural understanding and tolerance. Exposure to diverse ideas, histories, and perspectives enables students to appreciate differences and develop a global mindset. This understanding is crucial in an interconnected world, where collaboration and mutual respect are essential for addressing global challenges such as climate change and economic disparities. Teachers play an indispensable role in shaping the future of education. They are not merely transmitters of information but mentors who inspire curiosity and encourage lifelong learning. A dedicated teacher can transform a student’s life by recognizing their potential and nurturing their talents. Therefore, investing in teacher training and professional development is paramount to the success of any educational system. Despite its importance, many challenges hinder access to quality education. Socioeconomic barriers, gender inequality, and inadequate infrastructure remain significant obstacles for millions of children worldwide. Addressing these issues requires a collective effort from governments, non-governmental organizations, and communities. Policies that prioritize education funding, scholarships, and inclusive practices can make a substantial difference in bridging the education gap. Higher education, including universities and vocational training, also plays a critical role in societal advancement. While universities often focus on research and theoretical knowledge, vocational training equips individuals with practical skills required in various industries. Both pathways are essential for creating a balanced workforce capable of meeting the demands of a dynamic economy. Furthermore, lifelong learning has become increasingly important in the 21st century. With the rapid pace of technological advancements, skills acquired in the past may become obsolete. Adults must embrace opportunities for continuous education to stay relevant in their careers and contribute to their communities. Lifelong learning also enriches personal lives, providing avenues for hobbies, self-improvement, and intellectual growth. The integration of technology into education has opened up new possibilities for personalized learning. Adaptive learning systems, powered by artificial intelligence, can tailor educational content to the needs and pace of individual students. This approach ensures that no student is left behind while also challenging high-performing students to reach greater heights. However, the reliance on technology also presents challenges. Issues such as digital literacy, data privacy, and the digital divide need to be addressed to ensure that technology benefits all learners equally. Equipping schools with reliable internet connections and training teachers to use technology effectively are critical steps in this direction. In addition to academics, education should focus on holistic development. Arts, sports, and extracurricular activities are integral to nurturing creativity, teamwork, and leadership skills. A well-rounded education produces individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also emotionally intelligent and resilient. Environmental education is another vital aspect of modern curricula. Teaching students about sustainability, conservation, and the impact of human activities on the planet prepares them to be responsible stewards of the environment. By instilling these values early on, we can cultivate a generation committed to preserving the earth for future generations. Parental involvement is equally important in a child’s educational journey. When parents actively participate in their children's education, students are more likely to perform well academically and socially. Schools should encourage parent-teacher collaborations to create supportive environments for students. Ultimately, the goal of education is not just to prepare individuals for careers but to enable them to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives. Education should inspire curiosity, foster a sense of wonder, and empower individuals to explore their passions. In conclusion, education is a powerful tool for personal and societal transformation. It equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate life’s challenges and contributes to the collective progress of humanity. By investing in inclusive, quality education and addressing the barriers that hinder access, we can build a future where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential. posted by Isabel Gwendolyn at 1:50 PM 0 Comments: Post a Comment << Home About Me Name: Isabel Gwendolyn View my complete profile Google Search
